Valve Covers - Soooo many choices
Choices – small block stamped Ford, cast Ford, aftermarket, standard height, tall height, Gurney, Eagle, Weslake, ribbed or smooth, polished-wrinkle-painted, modified vents? Where does it stop?
I knew there is a height issue of the valve cover but learned it is on both sides. If you use a roller rocker setup, you’ll probably need a taller valve cover. But a taller valve cover will interfere with the underside of the rear clip. I am replicating an early version (MkI) of the GT40 and not the later Gulf cars. So the valve covers would be small block Ford, not the Gurney style. I used what Shelby would have used, parts common to the Mustang GT350’s they were building for Ford.
I chose a cast Cobra style from Ford Motorsports, supposedly what was being used on the Mustangs.
I knew they were short enough to clear the body clip. They were advertised as tall enough to work with most roller rockers. The key word was ‘Most’.
As the engine was assembled, we found an interference between the valve train and the baffles inside the cover. A little tweaking of the baffle system and all is well. A little sheetmeetal work to move the baffle deeper into the valve cover and I now have 1/4″ clearance to the valve train. Running on the dyno, we determined the mod fixed the issue. No interference, no tapping, no noise
