Fuel Tank – mod III

DATE

The original Hurricane build used a polyethylene tank by Tanks, Inc. – serviceable but it left a little to be desired. It was very difficult to get it to seal up completely. Builders of the first kits investigated various aluminum replacements. The Gen II cars came out with the first iteration of the factory aluminum tank.
Original Poly Tank
I added one of these to my build, but quickly noted a fault. The design protruded below the skirt of the car and wasn’t very becoming.
Aluminum Tank
1st Iteration
A little aluminum, a saber saw and some welding, I came up with the first mod, cutting the rear into a taper. The objectional view was gone, but also was my cruise range. My 15 gallon tank had become a 12 gallon tank. And with a big block, your cruises turned into a trip from fuel station to fuel station.
Mod’d Aluminum Tank
My first mod was a total redesign of the tank. A slight change to the mounting system and filling available voids, my capacity became 18 gallons. My latest tune is generating 15 mpg so I should be good for a range of 270 miles. More than my butt or bladder can stand. We should be good. Having owned and maintained one of these, access to the fuel pump and sender. Adding an access hatch to the trunk floor solved that issue. Other improvements:

• Stainless steel support straps • Fuel drain port • Aeromotive Stealth fuel system (pump and reservoir system) • Centroid fuel sender – capacitive type so slosh won’t affect readings. • Relocated filler pipe to gain trunk space
