“Lizstick Red” is a vibrant, custom multi-stage candy-red paint formulated by Saleen. The story behind it is as simple as it is personal: it is named after Liz Saleen, the wife of company founder Steve Saleen.
Developed directly for Liz, the color was created to be exceptionally deep, dynamic, and radiant in the sun. It first made its debut as a custom hue on her personal daily driver—a 1999 Saleen S281 Speedster. Because of the specific, multi-layered mix of silver base, candy red mid-coats, and precise flake ratio, Saleen guards the exact formulation closely.
I first saw this color on a Saleen Mustang about 15 years ago. Needless to say, it made an impression. And those who know me joke that I only drive red vehicles. I searched for years, trying to find the formula, which Saleen will only release to owners of a vehicle in that color. I made a connection with an owner who had to have his Saleen repaired and refused to pay the price they commanded for the BASF paint. Thru a lot of trial and error, they were able to replicate the paint: and were willing to share the formula with me.
The comment “exceptionally deep, dynamic, and radiant in the sun” really is an understatement. You have to see the color in the sun to really appreciate it.
